July 7-10, 2011 The Region III Championships were held in Hoschton, Ga. This event was four days of blazing heat and the Allstar team was on fire. Region III consists of the top five athletes in each respective event from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Potomac Valley associations. By the end of the weekend 12 athletes were qualified to participate in the Junior Olympics National Championships to be held in Wichita, Ks.
Jamaree Murray and Pierce Holloway were each gold medal winners. Murray was a double winner in the intermediate boys 400 and 200 meter dash. Murray won with times of 49.56 and 22.73 seconds respectively. Holloway won the intermediate boys 2000 meter steeplechase after only competing in the event for the second time. He was able to overcome five laps of barriers including water jumps to achieve a new personal best time of 7 minutes 16.66 seconds.
Silver medal winners were Jalen Ware, Omarion Hampton and Brian Davis. Ware grabbed the runner up position in the intermediate boys’ high jump. He finished with leap of 5 feet 10.75 inches. Hampton was second in the sub-bantam boys’ long jump. His best jump of the competition was 10 feet 7.75 inches. He also participated in the 100 and 200 meters. Hampton was tenth in the 100 meters and ninth in the 200 meters. Brian Davis was second in the 400 meter dash. He finished with a time of 49.59 seconds. The young men’s 400 meter dash was probably the tightest race of the weekend with only .77 seconds separating eight competitors.
Rueben Malone and Jakiiah Campbell each finished third in the triple jump and long jump. Malone competing in the young men’s long jump finished with a best jump of 45 feet 10.75 inches. Campbell will be heading to Kansas after finishing with a jump of 12 feet 10.50 inches in the bantam girls division.
Other top five qualifiers were: Jade Williams, sub-bantam girls’ long jump; Amara Bell, intermediate girls high jump; David Hamilton, youth boys 800 and 400 meters; Ethan Mitchell, intermediate boys javelin throw; and Clay Jones, young men’s’ 800 meter run.
