July 9, 2010 - Day two was off to a great start as Brian Williams won the sub-bantam boys long jump. He was the first Allstar to win gold this weekend. Williams was in third place after the first three attempts of the preliminaries. During the break, he was able to make some minor adjustments that would improve his chances in the finals. On his fourth attempt he improved his mark but was still hanging on to third place. On his fifth attempt Williams approached the take off board with good speed and a solid plant and landed 12 feet 2 1/2 inches into the pit. That jump was enough to take the lead by one centimeter and the standing was upheld throughout the sixth round. Brian's jump of 12' 2.50" was his personal best and set a new Allstar Record for the sub-bantam boys (ages 7-8).
In the relays, the Allstars were able to advance one of four relay teams to the finals to be held on Sunday. The youth boys (ages 13-14) combination of David Hamilton, Theo McKinnon, Robert Williams and Jamaree Murray will advance to the finals with the third best preliminary time of 3:44.44. Their time was impressive considering the quartet was only running fast enough to secure their birth to the finals.
Youth Boys 800 meter runner, Robert Williams concluded the day for the Allstars by grabbing the silver medal. After approximately 400 meters it appeared that he allowed the field to pull to far ahead. But as he patiently ran one step at a time he was able to reel in his opponents one at a time and finish in second place. Williams time of 2:09.61 is a new personal best and new Allstar team record. By placing in the top three Williams has advanced to the USATF National Junior Olympics to be held in Sacramento, CA.
The Region III Championship consists of the top five athletes in each event from the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, DC, and Maryland.
Competing on Saturday: Brian Williams 100m & 400m, David Hamilton (400), Jamaree Murray (400m & 200m), Brian Davis (400m), Jakiiah Campbell (200 & long jump), Alexis Teel (200m), Jaylon Holt (triple & high jump), Steven Bell (triple jump), Noa Lorenzetti (long jump), Jalen Ware (high jump), Kortney Pearce (discus).
