Carolina Allstars Track & Field
Winning Is Everything!!!
Kindred Wins First Allstar National Title
Joe Kindred has made history by becoming the first Carolina Allstar athlete to win gold at
USATF Junior Olympic Nationals. On July 28, 2005 in Indianapolis, Indiana, he won the young
men’s long jump (ages 17-18) on his final jump.

It was a nerve racking morning for Coach Coleman as he paced back and forth deliberating on
how to adjust Kindred’s steps. He had already missed the board on the previous jumps.
However after five rounds of jumping; without hesitating, Kindred sprinted down the runway,
planted his left foot on the board with about one inch to spare. As the white flag went up to
indicate a fair jump the crowd waited anxiously for the measurement. The official shouted,
"seven meters seventeen (23 feet, 6 ¼ inches)" and the Allstars were ready to celebrate. After
the remaining jumpers completed their final attempts failing to surpass the leap of Kindred, the
Allstar team began to celebrate as the victory was final. His jump set a new Carolina Allstar
record and he is also the Fuquay-Varina High School record holder with a jump of 23 feet 7 ¼
inches.

“Today is big day for this team,” says Coach Coleman. “To have an athlete win a national title
for this team in only its second year is remarkable.”

Kindred competed in the triple jump finishing tenth and he also achieved All-American honors
in the high jump by earning a medal for fifth place. He will be competing for St. Augustine’s
College on a track and field scholarship.

The Allstar team basically set up headquarters at the long jump pit as 4 of the 5 national
qualifiers was jumpers.

Rueben Malone received All-American honors by earning the bronze medal in the midget boy’s
long jump (ages 11-12). Malone was able to move from seventh place to third place by jumping
17 feet 5 ¼ inches on his final attempt. He was ranked second entering the competition.

Monique Vines and CJ Latimore also ranked well by finishing thirteenth and tenth respectively
in long jump competition. Vines a jumper for Southeast Raleigh High School competed in the
young women’s long jump (ages 17-18) with a best jump of 17 feet ¼ inch in the preliminaries.
She holds the Allstar team record at 18 feet 6 ½ inches. She will return next year as a senior.
Latimore’s best jump of 19 feet 1 ¼ inches secured his ranking in the top ten of U.S. long
jumpers for youth boy’s (ages 13-14).

Millbrook’s prep star Amelia Black finished 11th in the young women’s high jump. Black
competing with nagging injuries was able to clear a height of 5 feet 1 inch. She will be
attending UNC Chapel Hill this fall on a track and field scholarship. She holds the Allstar high
jump record at 5 feet 4 inches.

“Although everyone did not medal at this competition it is a great accomplishment to finish
where we did. It’s a good feeling knowing that you were among the best in the United States on
this day,” says Coach Coleman.
